Milan cannot catch a break this month. After losing Olivier Giroud to injury, another scary piece of news is coming from the French camp related to the fitness status of Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez. Giroud picked up an ankle problem during a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland last Thursday. After being forced off in pain, the 36-year-old Milan star tried to settle fans’ nerves by delivering an encouraging update on his injury. However, there’s a troubled feeling he could be unavailable for selection for the first 2023/24 edition of the famous Derby della Madonnina.
While Giroud’s possible absence might be devastating for Milan, Stefano Pioli’s new-found striking power could shoulder the burden without the veteran center-forward. Yet, replacing Maignan and Hernandez won’t be nearly as straightforward. The former has been a beast between the sticks since taking Gianluigi Donnarumma’s place two years ago.
As for the latter, it’s needless to point out his importance to the team. One of the world’s best left-backs suffered a knock against Ireland. Didier Deschamps won’t take any chances in a friendly contest, meaning Hernandez should return to Milan earlier to nurse his injury. Pioli must be desperate to have his stalwart fit and ready for the derby.
