Milan cannot catch a break at the start of the season, with more bad news emerging from the Algeria camp during the international break. According to Calciomercato, Ismael Bennacer has sustained an injury in training and will miss out on his country’s African Cup of Nations qualification match against Liberia.
Bennacer slumped to a calf injury during Algeria’s training session on artificial turf, causing more headache for Milan manager Paulo Fonseca amid the San Siro side’s disastrous start to the new Serie A campaign.
Heavily linked with a summer departure, the Milan midfielder drew injuries from Saudi Arabia. Atletico Madrid and Marseille were also interested. Though the Rossoneri considered a sale at one point, they eventually decided to reinstate the Algerian.
Bennacer was in the starting XI on matchday one as Milan and Torino shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw at San Siro. He has since been absent from Fonseca’s line-up, largely thanks to Youssouf Fofana’s arrival from Monaco.
However, Milan stuttered against Parma and Lazio before the international break, picking up just one point from those two matches. Poor midfield performances from Fonseca’s men have created the urge for Bennacer’s return to the picture.
After taking just two points from the opening three Serie A rounds, Milan cannot afford another slip-up in their upcoming league game against newly-promoted Venezia on home soil.
With the impending Champions League return and a mouth-watering derby against Inter around the corner, Milan must find a way out of the crisis. But they’ll likely have to do it without Bennacer.
