Milan Superstar Unbothered by Critics as He Shrugs Off Slow Start

Rafael Leao has been the subject of controversy this season as the Milan standout performer continues to blow hot and cold. However, the Portugal international wastes no sleep over the media headlines and fans’ criticism, insisting it only makes him stronger.

Leao is the highest-paid player at San Siro after renewing his contract until June 2028. Unfortunately for the Milan faithful, his recent performances haven’t backed his pay grade. Many have questioned his attitude at the start of the new season, while Paulo Fonseca even benched him against Lazio.

The 25-year-old scored off the bench in that match to salvage a 2-2 draw for Milan. That remains his only goal in six appearances across all competitions this season. To his credit, he has racked up three assists. But that’s not remotely enough for a player of his stature. As such, he’s emerged as a target for critics.

Malicious talks, however, don’t bother Leao. He took to Instagram stories to address the criticism. His post read: “They been trying to take out the smile of my face… But they can’t, that’s my strength.

Leao seemed irritated by Fonseca’s decision to sub him off in Sunday’s 2-1 win against Inter. Despite withdrawing his most highly-rated player from the field, the Portuguese oversaw a potentially season-defining win amid speculation Milan are considering his dismissal.

Fonseca will hope to see Leao at his best on Friday when Milan take on Lecce on home turf, seeking a third consecutive Serie A victory.
