Milan Veteran Kjaer Disappointed for Lack of Minutes

Simon Kjaer, who has been lost in the shuffle as of late, surprisingly vented about the situation from Denmark. The defender hasn’t gotten minutes in recent matches, even though Milan switched to a three-man defense. He voiced his complaints to newspaper DR (via Calciomercato).

“I’ve been able to practice without a hiccup for two months straight. I hadn’t managed to do that in eight years. Physically speaking, I’m in top shape. Sometimes things go as you wish, while they don’t on other occasions. In the end, it’s up to the coach to decide. The game versus Tottenham was my best one since the knee injury. I haven’t played afterward, and I’m clearly disappointed.”

Kjaer stated that his age wasn’t a problem.

“I have the same energy and eagerness to be on the pitch I had when I was younger. That’s what helps me keep performing at high levels. My goal is to continue being a top player, and I feel I still am today.”

The 34-year-old has featured 15 times this season, 11 in Serie A and 3 in Champions League, plus the Supercoppa Italiana. He has managed to stay relatively healthy, missing time only twice. He was sidelined for four matches in October due to a thigh strain and skipped two games in January as he needed time to work on his conditioning following the World Cup.

Kjaer has been an unused sub in the last six fixtures. Pierre Kalulu leapfrogged him in the defensive pecking order last season when he went down with an ACL tear. He also fell behind Malick Thiaw, who bloomed in the past month or so.
