Milan vs Liverpool Player Ratings: Rossoneri Crash Out of Europe

Milan failed to secure qualification to the next round of the Champions League after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool at the San Siro.

Stefano Pioli’s side also finished in fourth place of Group B, meaning that they also fail to qualify for the later rounds of the Europa League.

Liverpool named a heavily changed side with a lot of younger players getting an opportunity, including Tyler Morton, Nathaniel Phillips and Neco Williams. 18-year-old’s Conor Bradley and Max Woltman both made appearances off the bench as well for the Reds.

It was a disappointing performance by Milan here as Liverpool were in control of the match. Milan struggled to create much going forward in what was a truly underwhelming performance, considering their Champions League hopes were pinned on a positive result for the Rossoneri.

So, let’s get into our player ratings as Milan go crashing out of Europe.

Milan

Mike Maignan – 6

Made a few decent saves throughout but nothing too troubling. Made a strange save to deny an effort from Sadio Mane but he could not stop the rebound.

Pierre Kalulu – 6.5

Looked fairly solid with there being little joy down the left flank for Liverpool. Mane looked stronger after the break but Kalulu was subbed off in the second half for Alessandro Florenzi to offer more of an attacking threat.

Fikayo Tomori – 6.5

Decent block to deny an effort from range by Oxlade-Chamberlain in the first half. Opened the scoring for Milan when he got on the end of a rebound, following a corner. Looked strong in the tackle but made a costly mistake at the back which led to Liverpool’s second goal.

Alessio Romagnoli – 6.5

Good block inside the area to deny Mane in the first half and was composed in possession.

Theo Hernandez – 5

Up against the threat of Mo Salah. Attacked down the left flank when given the opportunity but did not do enough going forward. Was not the best of performances at the back either.

Sandro Tonali – 6

Twenty-one-year-old midfielder in the role of playmaker for Milan. Couple of nice touches and passes but was caught out a little positionally and did not do enough to create throughout. Looked slightly more influential to start the second half but did not do enough here.

Franck Kessie – 6

Dropped in to fill in at left-back as Theo Hernandez advanced down the left flank. Left Oxlade-Chamberlain in too much space in the midfield. Missed a great chance late on to put Milan back in the game. Struggled to make too much impact but started to pick up some good positions forward late on.

Junior Messias – 6.5

Struggled to get involved too much throughout the match. Created a chance for Krunic after an hour after some nice play down the right flank. Battled back well though and put himself about.

Brahim Diaz – 5.5

Tenacious and worked hard in the press but had little support from his teammates in that regard. Did not show much going forward, however. Quiet night before being subbed off just before the hour mark.

Rade Krunic – 6

Worked back well and made a good couple of challenges but offered very little offensively. Had an effort from the edge of the area after the hour mark but his effort went over the bar.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 6

Had one half chance in the first forty five but Konate did well to stop him from getting a shot away. Tried to make things happen but had little support in what was a frustrating night for the veteran.

Substitutions

Ismael Bennacer – 6.5

Put in a solid performance off the bench, creating a chance and was accurate in possession.

Alexis Saelemaekers – 5

Did very little to influence the match when he came on.

Alessandro Florenzi – N/A

Tiemoue Bakayoko – 6

Played a good ball in behind the Liverpool defence late on to create a great chance for Kessie.

Liverpool

Alisson – 6.5

Parried out from a Liverpool error following a Milan corner but was not at fault for the goal. Had little to do throughout the night apart from making a good save to deny a chance for Kessie late on.

Neco Williams – 7

Linked-up well with Salah down the right flank and did well at containing the threat of Hernandez. Fairly solid performance here.

Nathaniel Phillips – 7

Played a couple of nice passes out from the back and looked fairly composed. Solid performance.

Ibrahima Konate – 7.5

Little sloppy in possession early on but was heavily involved, making a couple of decent challenges. Great defending to deny Ibrahimovic who received the ball in a good position in the box in the first half. Should have done better to pick up Tomori in the box for the first goal but looked very solid overall.

Konstantinos Tsimikas – 7

Looked fairly solid when called upon but not much going for Milan offensively.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 7

Had a couple of efforts blocked by Tomori in and around the box. Picked up some nice spaces in and around the Milan final third and had a good effort which lead to the Liverpool equaliser.

Tyler Morton – 7

Sat in the center of midfield for Liverpool here and did not look out of place. Moved the ball well nicely as the game progressed after an initial slow start. Comfortable night for the youngster.

Takumi Minamino – 6.5

Couple of decent progressive passes throughout but poor defending at the front post for the Milan opener.

Mohamed Salah – 7.5

Looked sharp and worked well in the press. Scored the Liverpool equaliser here, following up on a rebound from Oxlade-Chamberlain with a good finish. Solid performance and did his job before being subbed off with Liverpool in the lead.

Divock Origi – 7.5

Did well to get a shot away inside the box but it was straight at Maignan in the first half. Scored Liverpool’s second goal to put them in front with a decent headed finish, following up on the rebound from a shot by Mane. Put himself about and put in a good performance.

Sadio Mane – 6.5

Not involved too much in the first half. More involved in the second half and had a hand in the build-up to Liverpool’s second goal. Fairly average night here.
