Milan Willing to Take Their Time in Pursuit of New Defender

The Milan search for a new defender will go down to the wire, but it will not necessarily yield a positive result. The Rossoneri lost Simon Kjaer for the season and Fikayo Tomori for a few matches. But they are not in panic mode and will make a move only the right candidate, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

Alessio Romagnoli cleared the COVID-19 protocols today. He will re-join Pierre Kalulu and Mattia Gabbia in the back, who have done okay in relief. The Italian youngster has drawn interest from multiple Serie A teams. However, the management plan to keep him.

Milan coach Stefano Pioli addressed the hunt for a defender before the Spezia contest: “We do not want to change just for the sake of it. We would do it only for players that improve the quality and depth of the squad. We will not sign somebody to say that we have done something. Kalulu and Gabbia have proven to be ready for important clashes. The club will pounce on the right opportunity; otherwise, we will stay as is.”

Lille president Olivier Letang confirmed that Sven Botman would not transfer in January: “We need him in Ligue 1 and Champions League. We have important goals, and he will stay with us to pursue them. That has been made clear to our players.”

Milan have shortlisted Eric Bailly, Abdou Diallo and Nicolò Casale, but no defender is particularly close to joining at the moment, the newspaper adds. Tomori will most likely miss the matches against Juventus and Inter.
