Milan Youngster Pobega Seizes Rare Opportunity to Play

After 50 days without getting minutes, Tommaso Pobega exploited his chance against Bologna, as Stefano Pioli rested 10 out of his usual 11 starters. The midfielder turned in a solid shift and leveled the game with a piledriver.

Per Calciomercato, despite the scarce playing time, the youngster never wavered in his belief to stay with the Rossoneri. He could have easily left on loan in recent transfer windows. The performance should allow him to entrench himself as the fourth option. That would lead to regular minutes since Rade Krunic, Sandro Tonali, and Ismael Bennacer have all been deployed together in recent matches.

Even though Pobega wouldn’t lack offers, he’s highly likely to continue being part of the Milan roster next season and in the future in general. The Rossoneri have often struggled with their UEFA lists. Therefore, having a reliable home-grown player is a big help.

The 23-year-old has 23 appearances to his name this season for a total of 974 minutes. He has scored three times. Before the recent match, he seemed to have been leapfrogged by Tiemoué Bakayoko, whom the side unsuccessfully tried to offload multiple times.

Our Take on Milan and Pobega

One of the few glaring flaws of Stefano Pioli is that it takes him a while to trust youngsters. The midfielder had plenty of Serie A experience under his belt and had already proven to be a solid contributor. With them going back to a muscular no.10, a position that’s suitable to him, they might soon find out that there’s more upside in fielding him rather than Rade Krunic.
