Henrikh Mkhitaryan “Stunner” Seals Parma Win as Roma Go Third

Three first-half goals saw Roma go ten games unbeaten in all competitions against Parma today, owing to yet another “masterclass” from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Roma went into this one having not lost since September, looking for a fourth-straight win and to continue their ever-impressive run in this new 2020-21 season. Against a Parma side with just one win in their previous seven Serie A fixtures, they started brightly; the newfound front-three of Pedro, Mkhitaryan and Borja Mayoral looking to take the game to the visitors.

Mayoral set up Jordan Veretout for an early chance and Mkhitaryan had one goal narrowly wide, before Mayoral opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark. The Spaniard finished from a tightening angle past Parma’s Luigi Sepe, but for Mkhitaryan to double the lead minutes later, and spectacularly so as well.

Running onto a loose ball some 25 yards out from goal, the Armenian struck a sweet half-volley straight into the top-right corner, Sepe helpless to prevent it and helpless to prevent his side from going 2-0 down.

Now on their way to a half-time lead, Roma boss Paulo Fonseca would’ve been thrilled to see Mkhitaryan hit another on the stroke of half-time – his fifth in the Serie A this season, and his sixth in three games for Roma. His second, although not as spectacular as his first, was well-taken – Rick Karsdorp’s pacey ball into the box found Mkhitaryan unmarked at the back post, but he had to adjust his body to volley home with his left.

On the day, Parma could register only one shot and it proved to be a thoroughly dominant home performance from Roma.

Mkhitaryan could well have had a hat-trick but for Sepe, who also denied what would’ve been an impressive goal for Leonardo Spinazzola in what was a much more subdued second-half.

Fonseca would use all five of his substitutions before the 80-minute mark, seeing out the game and seeing out the win in Roma which takes the club up to 3rd in the Serie A table.
