Monza Onboard Ex-Atalanta Icon on Bosman Transfer

Atalanta icon Papu Gomez is set to return back to Serie A with Monza. Having recently parted ways with Sevilla, Gomez, who was a free agent, has been snapped up by the Biancorossi following the six-month injury layoff sustained by forward Gianluca Caprari. The transfer window shut about a month ago, but clubs can still sign players who are out of contract i.e. on Bosman deals.

The 36-year-olf forward terminated his contract with Sevilla, and has been on the radar of Monza since. All the details of the deal have been defined, with a contract until next summer established for Gomez. Several proposals have been evaluated and subsequently rejected by the Gomez camp, with Ligue 1’s Metz, Turkey’s Fatih Karagumruk, and a couple of Saudi Arabian clubs unsuccessful in his pursuit.

Gomez left Atalanta after a row with Gian Piero Gasperini, leaving Bergamo and Italy in 2021 after seven seasons, during which he racked up 59 goals in 252 appearances.

Monza have been suffering with the lack of inspiration upfront, now on a three-match drawing streak, and with just one victory this season after six games. Raffaele Palladino has been looking for a quality reinforcement in the frontline and has had his wishes granted with the arrival of Papu Gomez.

He is set to star in the game against Sassuolo next.
