Mourinho Backs Roma to Sign Highly-Rated German Defender

Matthias Ginter, Borussia Monchengladbach’s centre-back, is one of Roma’s main targets in the upcoming summer transfer window. The German was largely credited with a potential to a move to Milan giants Inter in January, but a deal never came into fruition as the Nerazzurri opted out of the chance to sign the soon-to-be free agent whose contract expires in June 2022.

German outlet BILD (via Corriere dello Sport) reports of initial contacts between the defender and Giallorossi tactician Jose Mourinho, as sporting director Tiago Pinto prepares to overhaul the club’s ranks ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. Mourinho himself is specially interested in bolstering the backline, which so far boasts the fourth-worst defensive record of all the top ten Serie A teams (after Verona, Lazio and Fiorentina) with 32 goals conceded after 25 games.

The former Dortmund stopper moved to Gladbach in July 2017 and it looks highly unlikely that the club will offer him a renewal deal that extends his stay in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Barcelona are also said to be keeping close tabs on the defender, as are Inter. However, it remains to be seen whether the Nerazzurri reignite their interest in him after being closely linked all throughout winter.

Ginter has recorded 169 appearances for Monchengladbach in his five seasons so far, where the former Freiburg youth product has been a mainstay in defence.
