Mourinho Defends Zaniolo Following Boos from Roma Fans

Roma beat Genoa 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico to progress to the Coppa Italia quarterfinal stage, but it was not all smiles for Jose Mourinho, who was disappointed with the home fans booing Milan target Nicolo Zaniolo.

The Italian playmaker has not reached an agreement with Roma yet in order to extend his stay, with his contract expiring soon in the summer of 2024.

The Special One revealed his dissatisfaction in the post-match press conference (via VoceGiallorossa), defending the 23-year-old.

“I’m sorry I heard whistles. Empathy is very important, and as a group we always give our best. He’s a great example of a boy who gives his best. I learned as a child that if you do your best, you can’t give more. Zaniolo gives everything he has, my history of Rome is small but people hear me. I say they can whistle the team, the coach, the result but not the single player. I’m sorry for Zaniolo.”

Despite playing a vital role in conquering the UEFA Europa Conference League last season with the winner, Zaniolo has faced ups and downs in his Giallorossi stint. However, Roma fans are on the edge regarding the youngster.

Apart from Milan, he has also been linked to Newcastle United, Juventus and Napoli.
