Roma edged Sampdoria 1-0 at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, thanks to Lorenzo Pellegrini’s early penalty. The Giallorossi climbed into the top four with the win, only four points behind league leaders Napoli who they meet next at the Stadio Olimpico.
Jose Mourinho seemed elated with the victory in his post-match press conference (via VoceGiallorossa).
“It is a very important and well deserved victory. especially after having played so many games and so many injuries. We have heart and organization, it was a game played with intelligence. But someone will think differently, it will be said that Inter were beaten because they were poor but then they beat Barcelona, we lost to Atalanta and they said that Atalanta is cynical. It is hard to give credit. The truth is that with all the problems we have we are doing our best, maybe we needed a little less suffering.”
He also took the opportunity to praise Nicolo Zaniolo for his performance despite the attacker failing to find the net.
“I knew that Zaniolo was going to be impactful. Physically, he is devastating and for them it is very difficult to face such a player. In the last 20-30 minutes, he just missed the goal.”
When quizzed about what he would like to say to Luciano Spalletti ahead of the crucial top-four clash next week, Mourinho kept his answer short.
“See you on Sunday,” he said.
Roma sit in fourth place, sandwiched between Milan and Lazio on either side of them. They will await in-form Napoli this weekend in what is touted to be an exciting blockbuster.
