José Mourinho has identified Chelsea outcast Saul Niguez welcome in his ranks at Roma after the midfielder experienced an underwhelming loan spell in the Premier League under Thomas Tuchel.
The Atletico Madrid youth product moved from the Rojiblancos at the start of last season on a loan deal but ended up unconvincing during his one-season stay at Stamford Bridge. He has returned to Madrid since then, but is unlikely to feature regularly under Diego Simeone next season despite the club’s affection for him.
According to the latest reports emerging from Italy and confirmed via Diario AS, the Special One feels Saul’s addition can bolster his side’s prowess in the middle-third at the Stadio Olimpico. However, they will require the Spanish giants to offset a part of his wages to facilitate the move. Another loan deal is quite possible to foresee between the two parties since Roma will find it hard to finance their wage structure with another high-earning member of the squad.
Saul contract at the Wanda Metropolitano expires in the summer of 2026, giving Atleti ample space to negotiate a permanent transfer, for which the Giallorossi could be forced to part ways with nothing short of €25M-30M. Having already signed Nemanja Matic, the 27-year-old could prove to be an exciting addition.
Our Take on Roma Eyeing Saul
With the 2022 FIFA World Cup in sights, it is imperative for the Spaniard to search for regular playing opportunities. Mourinho’s presence in the dugout could be instrumental for him to kickstart his career once again, having appeared just 23 times for the Blues last season.
