José Mourinho revisited his choice to accept the Roma job three years ago but didn’t commit to staying at the helm long-term in the second half of an interview with Federico Buffa on Sky (via Tuttomercatoweb).
“I didn’t know this club when I came here, as I had simply faced them with Inter. I didn’t know the city and its football heart. My wish was to leave England after coaching three great clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham. The Giallorossi came to me with a speech that I liked a lot. The credit goes to the owners that brough me here. I learned about the fans, their doubts, and their frustrations and tried to sympathize with them.”
Mourinho has established a strong bond with the Roma faithful.
“I have grown fond of them. Many come to the training center in the morning just to have a pic. They follow the team everywhere. When you reach two finals and take them with you and shed tears of joy with them, you become part of them. That’s what I felt, and it was natural. I still get emotional when I look at the stands and the Curva.”
Mourinho was quizzed about whether he could prolong his Roma stay beyond the few months remaining on his contract.
“I don’t know. I promised the players I would stay put before the final in Budapest and the supporters after the Spezia tilt, and that’s what I did.”
