Muriel Not Thrilled with Role, Atalanta Mulling Over Sale

Luis Muriel is having a subpar season considering what he had accomplished in the previous campaign. A thigh injury knocked him for a couple of months. During that span, Duvan Zapata has fully taken the reins of La Dea’s frontline. Playing time has been hard to come by for his fellow compatriot.

Muriel is reportedly unhappy with the situation and would not mind transferring, Corriere di Bergamo reports. The 30-year-old would like to stay in Italy and does not lack suitors. However, it remains to be seen whether another top side would give him the consistent minutes he is looking for.

Atalanta held onto him last summer, but they might revisit their stance in January. His departure for a sizeable offer, at least €20M, would allow them to keep the balance sheets in order and retain younger players in the future. Moreover, the extra funds would bankroll their pursuit of Jeremie Boga, who has different traits.

Juventus, Milan, Inter have all shown interest in Muriel in the past. They could all use another offensive weapon, especially the first two. Other clubs would likely join the race as well if the striker was really made available. He had the best scoring average in Europe last season and thrived as a super-sub. Instead, he has hit the net three just times in the ongoing one, adding four assists. The forward has collected 15 total appearances so far, starting six times. Gian Piero Gasperini has rarely deployed the two Colombians together, reducing his opportunities.
