Napoli Attempting to Complete Double Midfield Swoop

Napoli plot to try again to sign Billy Gilmour from Brighton after getting their opening bid rejected. Moreover, his prospective arrival won’t affect their pursuit of Marco Brescianini. The talks with him and Frosinone are in the later stages, Il Mattino reports.

The Scot has just two years on his contract, and the Azzurri will attempt to leverage that. The Seagulls would have to settle for less next summer if he didn’t extend it, as the expiration date would be fast approaching.

Napoli tendered €10M for Gilmour and are preparing a raise, while Brescianini is on the verge of joining for roughly €12M. They have overtaken Atalanta in such a race. They might wait until Gianluca Gaetano and Jens Cajuste’s exits first, though.

The Partenopei are tussling with a few clubs for Brighton’s 23-year-old but believe to be in pole position. He flourished with Roberto De Zerbi at the helm as he wasn’t a full-time starter two years ago. He’s a Chelsea product and already has 30 international cups under his belt.

In the same role, the Azzurri just announced that Michael Folorunsho has extended his contract until 2029.

Our Take on Napoli, Gilmour, and Brescianini

The pairing would be overkill in a season where they don’t have the cups, but they are working for the future as well given their age, and the fees are reasonable. Antonio Conte’s 3-4-2-1 might not be set in stone. The additions hint at a more muscular midfield, if not this year perhaps down the line.
