Napoli ‘Confident’ of Luring Brighton Defensive Talent

Norwegian defender Leo Ostigard, who spent 2022 on loan at Genoa from Brighton & Hove Albion for the latter half of the recently concluded Serie A season, is in pole position for a move down south to Napoli.

The Partenopei are in line to bolster their defense amid strong links of main man Kalidou Koulibaly heading elsewhere, and Axel Tuanzebe returning to Manchester United after his loan move expires. The Senegalese star spoke from his national team’s camp today (via SportMediaset).

“To be honest, I do not know anything yet. I just wish the situation will be sorted quickly.”

Brighton, the Premier League parent club, were reportedly contacted by Napoli earlier last week regarding the availability of 22-year-old Ostigad, who is currently enjoying the initial senior international matches of his career in the UEFA Nations League.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Southerners are confident of completing the agreement in the next few days.

The Seagulls have been handed €3M plus bonuses with a percentage of future resale as the initial offer by Napoli, taking advantage of Genoa’s inactivity with regard to the youngster’s stay. However, the English club value Ostigard much higher, estimably double what Napoli are bidding.

The highly-rated defender is known for his versatility in the backline, becoming a fan favorite during his time on loan at Coventry City – his breakthrough season in 2020/21. Napoli have given heed to his development only recently, but the high demand for him would suggest the club moved quickly in order to not lose out on the transfer race.
