Napoli Face Goalkeeper Dilemma as Juventus Clash Looms, Mirante Offers Himself

The Partenopei have a dilemma on their hands for the main goalkeeper position after both David Ospina and Alex Meret recently sustained injuries. Out of the two, it is certainly the latter who has been on the receiving end of a much disappointing injury.

Alex Meret was announced to have fractured the bones in his vertebrae during Napoli’s 2-1 win over Genoa before the international break began. Napoli confirmed that ‘a fracture of the left transverse apophysis of the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae’ in a club statement after tests were conducted at the Coverciano medical center.

The Italian is out for several weeks and probably months.

Colombia shotstopper David Ospina suffered a knock against Bolivia in his country’s World Cup Qualifier clash during the international break. His situation is being monitored as Colombia play their third and final game in a few days.

The plight of the two goalkeepers has prompted Napoli to look for a third-choice backup – ex-Roma veteran Antonio Mirante has reportedly offered his services to the Naples club, according to La Gazetta dello Sport (via RomaPress.net).

Mirante’s contract with the Giallorossi expired earlier in June and he’s now free to move to any club. He has 268 Serie A appearances under his belt.

Napoli face Juventus in an early blockbuster going into the new season when the Italian top flight resumes.
