Napoli Not Close to Shaking Hands with Starting Goalie

Napoli have begun haggling a pair of pivotal renewals after an impressive summer, but things aren’t going as swimmingly as they hoped with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Alex Meret. The former turned down the first offer from their new management, but there’ll be a new meeting soon.

The Partenopei are also distant from coming to terms with the shot-stopper, Il Mattino informs. Antonio Conte has signed off on it and trusted him as their starter even though they kept Elia Caprile last summer, but he’s under contract only until the end of the campaign.

Napoli don’t want to lose Meret for nothing but will have to step up in the talks. His entourage has asked for a three-year deal, while the Azzurri might not want to commit for that long.

His agent Federico Pastorello will be back in town in late October for a face-to-face meeting and to verify whether there are the premises to stick together. The team faces more urgency than the player, who’d technically be allowed to sign a pre-contract with a new team in January.

Our Take on Napoli and Meret

Even though he’s been a little inconsistent in the past, the mistake was made in previous years by agreeing to an odd and short-term contract. It’s hard to imagine his requests are too high to be met, so it’s a matter of believing in him. He’s been perfectly fine, or arguably even more than that so far. Even though they have a sound replacement in hand, letting him walk would be a grave error. And, if they eventually soured on him, they could still sell him down the line even if he re-upped.
