Napoli Pushing for Fenerbahce Star, Eye Chelsea Goalie

Napoli need to replenish their defense following the departure of Kalidou Koulibaly, and Fenerbahce’s Kim Min-Jae is atop the list. They are also plotting to bring in an experienced goalkeeper to pair up with Alex Meret and have earmarked Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Partenopei have hindered Rennes’ attempt to acquire the center-back. The French club is ready to activate his €20M release clause. He would reunite with coach Bruno Genesio in France, who managed him at Beijing Gouan.

On the other hand, the prospect of playing in Champions League and having a major role at Napoli has convinced Kim Min-Jae to stall and listen to the new proposal. The Azzurri executives are set to fly to Turkey for a direct meeting. Given the circumstances, they need to negotiate more with the player than with his club. The top alternative is PSG’s Abdou Diallo, but the Partenopei are going all-in on the South Korean international.

Director Cristiano Giuntoli declared that Meret is going to sign an extension. However, the club also wants another reliable option. As per Marca, they asked Chelsea for the loan of Kepa. His wages are massive, and so the Blues would have to contribute significantly.

Our Take on Napoli Targeting Kim Min-Jae and Kepa

The Azzurri are unlikely to spend big and will not be able to sign somebody of Koulibaly’s caliber. The Fenerbahce center-back fits the bill of what they are looking for, a young-ish but not raw player that can further grow.

The attempt for Kepa, and Keylor Navas, seems a further vote of no-confidence towards Meret. One has to wonder whether he will indeed re-up. Still, they are improbable options due to their salaries. If they really believe in him, they should seek less cumbersome names.
