Napoli Reportedly Take an Interest in Arsenal Defender

Napoli are in the early stages of searching for a new center-back, and Takehiro Tomiyasu is the latest addition to their wish list. The Japanese international has rarely been a consistent starter since transferring to the Premier League.

Per SportMediaset, the Azzurri want a new piece after Natan’s shoulder injury and are testing the waters for a few potential candidates. Merih Demiral might leave Saudi Arabia and is an option for them and Roma.

Tomiyasu would come in handy for Napoli for his versatility since he can play in every defensive role. Arsenal spent nearly €19M to sign him from Bologna in August of 2021. He has collected 72 appearances with the Gunners.

The 25-year-old was in the midst of this best stretch, having started six consecutive matches, before going down with a calf injury in mid-December. He’s still on the mend because of it. Physical problems have mired also his previous campaigns with the Gunners.

Our Take on Napoli and Tomiyasu

Natan’s shoulder sprain is serious but not season-ending. Their addition in the back might be more long-term oriented and tied to the future of Leo Ostigard. The Japanese wouldn’t be a short-term fix since he’s hurt and will likely participate in the AFC Asian Cup. Plus, he’s not really a center-back, as he’s much better on the flank. Arsenal have reportedly resisted the departure of Jakub Kiwior, who’s less important to them, and will most likely do the same even more strongly in this case.
