Napoli Turn Down First Bid from Lazio for Star Midfielder

Lazio have tendered €20M to acquire Piotr Zielinski, but Napoli rejected them. The Biancocelesti are in the hunt for a top-notch midfielder following the departure of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Pole played for Maurizio Sarri in two separate teams considering their shared past at Empoli and with the Azzurri.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the capital side is unlikely to increase their opening offer. Moreover, they want to avoid a long saga where they might ultimately end up empty-handed. They will pivot toward different targets sooner rather than later.

On top of being targeted by Lazio, Zielinski also received an offer from Saudi Arabia, but he rebuffed it to talk with Napoli first. The negotiation regarding an extension has been arduous so far, but he’s not in a rush to depart at this stage.

The Biancocelesti currently have PSV Eindhoven’s Joey Veerman as the main fallback plan to address their midfield. He tallied 9 goals and 14 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions last season.

Our Take on Lazio, Napoli, and Zielinski

A deal involving presidents Claudio Lotito and Aurelio De Laurentiis promises to be high drama considering their stubbornness. Despite a short-term contract and the chairman’s stance, there’s a chance he’ll stay put. It doesn’t seem like a resolution will come particularly quickly, which might discourage the suitors.
