Napoli Unlikely to Take the Bait on Veteran Candreva

Antonio Candreva is without a team after terminating his contract with Salernitana and has been linked to Napoli, which had been seeking a new man on the right wing. They tracked Amar Dedic and Junior Dina Ebimbe but couldn’t come to terms with RB Salzburg and Eintracht Frankfurt. They esteem the veteran but are unlike to sign any free agent, Rai reports (via Onefootball). He was offered to them by his entourage, but the deal hasn’t had legs for now.

The attacker urged sides to come and get him in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’ve spent the summer as if I was in a pre-season retreat. I practiced with an athletic trainer in Sardinia and I’m continuing to do so in Milan. It’s clearly different, but I’m not used to sitting idly. I miss the locker room, the fans, and the opponents. The fire is still burning. Football is my life, and I’m convinced I’ve a lot to give still.”

Napoli probably won’t bring in Candreva, but other teams could come forward.

“I’m looking for a club that regards and motivates me. The data says I run like a 28-year-old even though I’m 38. The role doesn’t matter: I want to be in the thick of it and help my teammates.”

Our Take on Napoli and Candreva

He was still serviceable at Salernitana despite their terrible season, but deploying him as a wing-back in a high-intensity scheme at this stage of his career is a big stretch. He could be useful for a few minnows though. The Partenopei would have really been whole had they found a dynamic contributor in such a role.
