Napoli Won’t Smash Juventus Record After Surreal Night

Napoli were handed their third loss of the season by Milan Sunday. That ensures they won’t be able to break Juventus’ 102-point record. They’d stop one short even if they won all their remaining matches. The Bianconeri set it in 2013/2014 with Antonio Conte at the helm, Goal points out.

The Azzurri have collected 71 points so far. They can at most get to 101 after the faux pas with the Rossoneri. The Old Lady slipped up just twice that campaign, plus three draws, and they closed with a 17-point advantage over second-placed Roma.

Napoli weren’t helped by a weird atmosphere at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona against Milan. Part of the hardcore fans remained silent for most of the game, Tuttomercatoweb relays. They were protesting against the club and the authorities for two separate reasons. First of all, due to a price hike of the tickets for the Champions League clash against the same opponents. Secondly, they were prohibited from bringing drums, banners, and flags into the arena by the police commissioner.

The decision didn’t extend to the opposing supporters, which were instead very loud. The local ones only had a few chants against team president Aurelio De Laurentiis. They staged a protest outside the stadium before the tilt. Rival fringes of the Curva even came to blows because not everybody was in agreement.

Despite the negative result, Napoli maintain a 16-point lead over Lazio. They need five more wins to clinch the Scudetto, therefore they just have to come out on top in half of their remaining games.
