Milan emergency signing Luka Jovic is in line for his first Serie A start for Stefano Pioli’s troops when they meet Genoa on Saturday. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the ‘lifelong Rossoneri fan’ is the front-runner to team up with Noah Okafor and Samuel Chuwkueze in the final third.
Jovic’s move to the San Siro on the deadline day came out of the blue. Milan had other targets on their radar, including Porto’s Mehdi Taremi and Lille’s Jonathan David. But after failing to convince their clubs to sanction deals, Rossoneri unexpectedly turned to the Serbian striker.
While Jovic’s fellow newcomers are already making strides, he’s been a marginal figure in the early goings. Okafor has netted in his last two Serie A appearances for Milan. But he’ll likely take Rafael Leao’s place on the left wing, allowing the ex-Fiorentina man to go central.
Pioli’s decision to reshuffle the deck is somewhat understandable.
Milan had a physically and mentally exhausting clash against Borussia Dortmund in midweek Champions League action. Despite sharing the spoils in a tepid 0-0 draw on Wednesday, Leao and Olivier Giroud worked their socks off at Signal Iduna Park.
They both deserve some rest and after securing much-needed strength in depth during the summer transfer window, Milan can oblige. Jovic has failed to impress in a few cameo appearances so far this season. But he might flip the script on his first start for the club.
