No Extension Talks Yet Between Juventus and Giorgio Chiellini

Giorgio Chiellini might no longer be a Juventus player next season, like his teammate Gianluigi Buffon. His contract is up in the summer and the negotiation to renew it has not started yet. His representative Davide Lippi was coy about the future of the defender in an interview with Sky Sport.

“Nobody from Juventus contacted me to prolong his deal. I do not know whether he will continue playing or if he will retire. President Andrea Agnelli always talks directly to him about these matters. Now they are both extremely focused on finishing the season well.” The center-back hinted a couple of times in the past that he could hang up boots after the European Championship.

The agent opened to possibility of seeing him in another club: “I think it is difficult, but, at the same time, if an athlete feels like he can keep going, he has the right to do so. However, we are talking about the player that represents the history of this club. We will discuss it in due time.”

Chiellini has been in Turin since 2005, accumulating 636 appearances. Few muscular injuries have limited the 36-year-old defender to 16 appearances in the 2020/21 season. He played just four times in the previous one mostly due to an ACL tear.

Davide Lippi also weighed in on his father’s rumored return at Juventus: “I enjoy the fact that we are spending more time together now that he is not working. However, surely there are several contexts in the football world where his advice would come very in handy.”
