No Surprises in Coppa Italia Second Round as Monza Crush Triestina

The Second Round of the Coppa Italia 2020-2021, featuring 40 Serie B and Serie C clubs, saw no major upsets.

The unexpected, however, happened in Frosinone, where Serie C side Padova shocked Alessandro Nesta’s Canarini who lost a Serie A promotion play-off a little more than one month ago, and in Verona – where Chievo lost on penalties to Catanzaro.

In an Abruzzo region derby, Pescara had to fight hard to overcome the strenuous resistance of San Nicolò Notaresco – who had eliminated Catania in the First Round. The small Teramo side succumbed only on penalties.

In the day of their President Silvio Berlusconi’s birthday, Christian Brocchi’s Monza crushed Triestina to show once again that their are a serious challenger for a promotion to the top-flight. Goals by Antonino Barillà, Mota Carvalho, and José Machin got the job done for the Brianzoli, who also saw a perfectly regular fourth goal disallowed.

A hotly-contested game between SPAL and Bari ended in a goalless stalemate. It took goalkeeper Demba Thiam’s heroics for the home Biancazzurri to advance on penalties.

A sad note to end: Trapani did not show up in Brescia as the club is going through a sever financial crisis and will most likely face a 0-3 loss. A sad ending for a club who’s been a constant presence in Serie B for a few years and once even got close to achieve a promotion to the top flight…
