Official: Cengiz Under Joins Marseille on Season-Long Loan

Olympique de Marseille have completed the loan signing of Roma forward Cengiz Under with an option to make it permanent next summer. The French club has confirmed via their official website that they found an agreement with the Italian side over the winger’s temporary move to Ligue 1.

Under spent last season at Leicester City but failed to secure regular first-team opportunities at the King Power Stadium. After the Premier League giants refused to turn his loan move permanent, it became clear the Turkey international will have to find another destination this summer.

The 23-year-old has fallen out of favor at Roma, with Jose Mourinho already making it clear the Turk doesn’t belong to his plans for next season. As such, Under had to find an exit route of the Stadio Olimpico, with Marseille coming to the rescue.

After capturing the services of the highly-rated winger Konrad de la Fuente from Barcelona, the Ligue 1 giants added another talented forward to Jorge Sampaoli’s roster. Another former Giallorossi, Gerson, arrived at the Stade Velodrome earlier in the summer as Les Phocéens look to mount pressure on a top-three finish in Ligue 1 next term.

Under will link up with another ex-Serie A star at Marseille. Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik switched Napoli for France back in January on an 18-month loan.

Considering Sampaoli’s side is currently under construction, the former Istanbul Basaksehir starlet should have a significantly improved game time compared to his underwhelming 2020/21 season at Leicester. Indeed, Under comes as a direct replacement for Florian Thauvin, who recently left the club to team up with Andre-Pierre Gignac at Tigres.
