Official: Juventus Sign Douglas Luiz on Five-Year Contract

Juventus announced Sunday that Douglas Luiz has become Thiago Motta’s first signing since taking charge of the club this summer. The Brazil international has put pen to paper on a five-year contract until June 30, 2029.

Despite being in the United States as Brazil bid to win their 10th Copa America title, Luiz has signed for Juventus after Aston Villa accepted the Italians’ three-player swap proposal. Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea head in the opposite direction.

Weston McKennie was initially supposed to help Juventus bring Luiz to Turin. But after the USMNT midfielder failed to agree on personal terms with Aston Villa, Barrenechea has jumped in as an emergency solution. The Argentine spent last season on loan at Frosinone, but despite performing well, he wasn’t part of Bianconeri’s plans.

Luiz’s arrival marks the beginning of a new era at Juventus. He’ll be the central figure of a new-look midfield at the Allianz Stadium. With Adrien Rabiot on the verge of exiting the club and the Turin club vying for Teun Koopmeiners’ signature, the record-time Serie A champions will enter the 2024/25 campaign with a brand-new engine room.

The new Juventus star leaves Aston Villa after five years. He made 2024 appearances for the Birmingham outfit, netting 22 goals and chipping in with 24 assists. Luiz is a technically gifted deep-lying midfielder, often unafraid to get his hands dirty to provide an extra layer of cover to his backline.

After completing Luiz’s signing, Juventus can turn their attention to Koopmeiners. Meanwhile, they’re preparing to wave goodbye to Arthur Melo
