Giroud Rues Champions League Exit, Focuses on Milan Derby

Milan continued their disappointing winless streak in Europe against Porto, crashing out of the group stages in their first Champions League campaign since the 2013/14 season.

The Rossoneri salvaged a 1-1 draw at the San Siro against Portuguese giants Porto. Luis Diaz’s early opener was canceled just after the hour mark when Chancel Mbemba Mangulu scored an own goal and equalized for Milan.

Centre-forward Olivier Giroud was unimpressed by his team’s display and expressed his frustration on Milan’s Champions League proceedings.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia (via MilanNews), Olivier Giroud commented “We have the qualities to play the Champions League. We played good games, like at Anfield and against Atletico, although we were a man down. We need to understand what are the needs in a competition like this. We hope to score more points in the next games, but now we feel a bit frustrated.

However, Milan still have Serie A to look forward to as they have started their Scudetto campaign in fantastic form – unbeaten after 11 matchdays, as the only other team in Italy to do so, alongside Napoli.

They face Inter next in the Milan Derby.

Speaking of which, Giroud commented: “Now we are focused on the derby. We play for this type of matches and I can’t wait to play against Inter in the derby. We need to rest and then we will come back with the same energy and the desire to win this derby.”

Inter too, were unbeaten, until they faced a 3-1 defeat at the hands Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio at the Stadio Oimpico on matchday 8. The Nerazzurri sit seven points behind the high-flying Rossoneri, who sit joint-top with Napoli on 31 points.
