Osimhen Closer to Extension but Sale Chatter Lingers

Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis made a surprise announcement over the weekend, stating that the renewal of Victor Osimhen was in its final stages and that only the signature was missing.

According to Rai’s Ciro Venerato (via Tuttomercatoweb), even if that indeed happens, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the striker will stay put for the long haul.

“It could be the right time, but there are still some details to be sorted before the official tweet by the president. His agent Roberto Calenda is a lot more cautious after a meeting in Madrid. The salary has been defined. Everything hinges on the amount of the release clause, which would allow Osimhen to leave Napoli at the end of the season.”

“Prolonging the contract for three more years would permit Napoli to raise the request to over €100M, making a ‘plusvalenza.’ Arsenal are in talks with his entourage. They lead Chelsea at this stage. Real Madrid have stepped away for the moment. Re-upping to bid farewell: that’s the market in modern football.”

Our Take on Napoli and Osimhen

We’ll see whether the patron’s words will indeed hold true. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s premature with his remarks. If his entourage was working toward his departure, there’d be little logic in coming to terms now, unless the release clause was low, which probably won’t be the case. The extension wouldn’t necessarily guarantee he’d stay, but his exit would no longer be certain.
