Osimhen Enroute Serie A Record Even Maradona Couldn’t Reach

Napoli have been in stupendous form throughout the campaign, both on the domestic and continental front, thanks largely to Victor Osimhen’s clinical form. He is en route to becoming the first ever Napoli player to win both the Capocannoniere (a.k.a Paolo Rossi) award and Serie A title in a single season.

Osimhen is cruising through the goalscoring charts, floating a comfortable seven goals ahead of second-placed Lautaro Martinez. Keeping up the form he’s in, Osimhen could reach a record even the great Diego Maradona failed during his 1987/88 Capocannoniere season – leading the Partenopei to a title as the lead goalscorer.

Maradona scored 15 goals that campaign to grab the personal accolade but saw his Napoli crumble to Scudetto winners Milan by a mere three points. Edison Cavani (29 goals in 2012/13) and Gonzalo Higuain (36 goals in 2015/16) also failed to propel the Partenopei to championship-winning heights, but Osimhen is very well in line to best his peers.

With 11 more matchdays to go this season, Osimhen, who now has 21 to his name, could very well reach the 30-goal mark. It remains to be seen if he can match or beat the all-time goalscoring record in a single season jointly held by Higuain and Ciro Immobile – 36 goals.

Napoli sit in an extremely comfortable position, a whopping 19 points clear of second-placed Lazio, en route to a first Scudetto title in 33 years.
