The remaining matches of the 2021-2022 season could easily be the final ones for David Ospina at Napoli. The goalkeeper is on an expiring contract and strongly considering leaving. The Azzurri have not really pushed the envelope to re-up his deal up, at least so far.
His agent Lucas Jaramillo openly alluded at him leaving in an interview with Semana: “There have not been recent developments, but it is normal at this stage. We fielded many calls, but we have to wait a little for the situations to develop. We have a big advantage compared to previous years, as we are free from any commitment. It is a major opportunity that we have to exploit fully to choose the best possible solution.”
According to Corriere dello Sport, Ospina is biding time before answering Napoli. His entourage has touched base with a few clubs. In particular Real Madrid, even though he would have a backup role there. Carlo Ancelotti often relied on him when he was helming the Partenopei.
The Colombian shot-stopper has been offered to Lazio. However, they moved on to other targets because they considered his requests to be too high. Sergio Rico remains the frontrunner to take over from Thomas Strakosha, who is about to be a free agent as well.
Instead, Napoli would be ready to hand the role to Alex Meret should Ospina bolt. However, he would have to extend his contract because it runs out in 2023. The Azzurri have also expressed interest in Juan Musso and Granada’s Luis Maximiano.
