Østigård Praises Min-jae for Paving Way, Hopes to Excel in Napoli

Leo Østigård didn’t enjoy the best of starts to his Napoli career when he arrived last season under Luciano Spalletti, as Kim Min-jae overshadowed more than most with his fantastic performances. However, the Norwegian has become a staple in Rudi Garcia’s starting line-up this campaign, but as the defender himself says, Min-jae is still a missed figure in the Partenopei setup.

Speaking to Tranfermarkt.it, Østigård spoke of his improved displays thanks to more playing time, but at the same time praised the South Korean stopper for paving the way.

“No one here is happy with his departure. He is a great person and we miss him. He had a great opportunity: apparently, he could decide between Manchester United and Bayern Munich and opted for the Bavarians in the end. It was a good choice. It is undeniable that his departure had positive implications for me. My chances of playing increased immediately and it’s my turn do my best now. The previous season was difficult for me. It’s easier to show your qualities when you have several games in a row rather than just one every now and then.”

He then revealed the background behind his permanent transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion.

“Napoli wanted me badly, the managers called me every week. It took eleven, twelve weeks to close the transfer. Saying no would have been very difficult and I have never regretted choosing this very special club.”

Østigård spent three seasons on loan at four different clubs and disclosed his satisfaction at finding a permanent home such as Napoli to show what he is capable of.

“After years on loan, I was looking for a place where I could stay longer. I’m really happy to be here. It’s different to England: it’s impossible to describe how it feels to play for Naples, you have to be here to understand it. The fans live for football, it’s like a religion. Obviously, it was very useful to play in different countries and leagues. It allowed me to acquire knowledge and constantly improve myself. I have no intention of stopping now. It would be wrong. I always want more, that’s what drives me. I’ll reflect on what I’ve achieved when I’m 40, when I’m done with football.”

The 23-year-old has just 19 appearances so far for the Partenopei, but it won’t be surprising to see him become a long-term member of the squad and etch his legacy in the south of Italy.
