Guardiola: “Facing an Italian Team Isn’t the Best Gift”

Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City bulldozed through Real Madrid to emphatically win 5-1 on aggregate, setting up a classic showdown against Inter in the UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul. However, the ex-Barcelona tactician is aware of the threat the Nerazzurri possess at hand to upset them next month.

In his post-match interview with Prime Video (via Calciomercato), Guardiola cautioned his side ahead of the final but claimed they have enough time to talk and prepare for it.

“An Italian team is an Italian team. A final against it is always not the best gift, honestly. There’s nothing better for them than to act as underdogs. But we’ll have time to talk about it.”

The Nerazzurri have been Guardiola’s bogey in the past, tactically outclassing his world-class Barcelona team 13 years ago over two legs in the Champions League semi-finals. José Mourinho masterminded that victory enroute a treble. Simone Inzaghi will be looking to take inspiration from the current Roma manager to have an edge in the showdown in Turkey.
