Pioli Backs Brahim Diaz, Talks Asensio, Theo and Kessié

Stefano Pioli commented on the title victory: “We have always believed we could come out on top. The key moments were the comeback in the Derby and the last-gasp goal against Lazio. The last six wins in a row with a more challenging schedule demonstrated our mental strength.”

The coach discussed Brahim Diaz in a chat with AS: “Many forget that he is still young and he was at his first year as a starter in a top team. The same thing happened to Sandro Tonali last season. The increased pressure can lead to ups and downs. He had a strong start, but then he lost confidence due to COVID and injuries. Some of my decisions might have contributed as well. I am sure he is a great player, though. He has top-notch skills and is very useful to our style. I want him to stay, naturally.”

Pioli touched on Marcos Asensio: “He is good, but he belongs to Real Madrid, and I am too happy about my own players to talk about those of other sides. Our goal remains to have the right mix of youngsters and veterans, which we achieved in 2021-2022.”

The gaffer heaped praise on Theo Hernandez: “He was spectacular, and he is really one of a kind. He is a fury, and he has incredible power and determination. I think he has become an even more complete player this season. It was nice for him to be finally called up by France. He is one of the best fullbacks in the world and still has room to grow.”

Pioli was asked about how he managed the Franck Kessié’s situation: “I only look at what happens on the pitch. He, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu have never been superficial. They were on point and professionals.”
