Milan cruised to a 4-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb to head closer to the UEFA Champions League knockout stage, just a point away from qualification. The seven-time European champions eliminated the hosts from the competition, becoming the first side to win away at Zagreb since December 2021, and coach Stefano Pioli is elated with the crucial victory.
Speaking to Sky Sport (via MilanNews) after the match, the Rossoneri tactician took stock of the game and is optimistic regarding his side’s chance to qualify for the last 16.
“We had a difficult start, because they surprised us a little with their positions. Then we settled down and did well in front of us because we have strong players. It’s a nice victory and good game. Now another step in front of our fans against Salzburg.”
He also commented whether Milan are now a more mature team.
“Yes, but by now the team is used to playing decisive games; we have played so many that we don’t make mistakes. We are aware of our qualities and we never underestimate anyone. Passing the group would be the important step.”
The Rossoneri will need a draw to qualify for the next stage, but Pioli is not thinking about it yet.
“Let’s think about Torino, then we’ll think about Salzburg. Torino gave us a hard time last year, then with Salzburg we should play without thinking about a draw, because it’s not our mentality.”
Milan sit three points behind leaders Chelsea who have already qualified for the Round of 16. Milan leapfrog Salzburg into second place in the group who they play next, but first they will need to better Torino in Serie A.
