Poland international Piotr Zielinski named the Inter midfield as ‘among the best in Europe’ during a lengthy interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. The 30-year-old joined the Nerazzurri at the start of July after running down his contract with Napoli.
Widely considered one of the best midfielders in Serie A, Zielinski wore the Partenopei shirt for eight years, helping the club halt a 33-year Scudetto wait in 2022/23. As he embarks on a fresh chapter at Inter, the former Empoli star assesses the strength of his new surroundings.
“Our midfield is among the best in Europe. And now that I’m here, it’s even stronger (laughs),” the new Inter playmaker said. “Jokes aside, when you played against this midfield, you immediately noticed how intense and complete it was: as soon as they lost the ball, they attacked you.
“Regarding competition, I hope to play as many games as possible, but what matters is being ready because your moment will come sooner or later.“
Like another Inter signing, Mehdi Taremi, Zielinski has been part of Simone Inzaghi’s pre-season camp since the get-go. He was a first-team regular at Napoli for years, but the competition for places at Giuseppe Meazza is far fiercer.
Zielinski would have to dislodge one of Hakan Calhanoglu, Nicolo Barella, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to land a starting berth at Inter. That’s a potentially Herculean task, considering this trio provided the backbone for Inter’s dominant run to their 20th Scudetto last term.
On top of that, Davide Frattesi seeks a more prominent role in Inzaghi’s set-up after Inter rejected Juventus’ approach for the ex-Sassuolo man.
