Union Berlin claimed their first-ever point in the UEFA Champions League in the 1-1 draw vs Napoli, which failed to close the gap to group leaders Real Madrid. Partenopei stalwart Matteo Politano and captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo shared their regret over the failed chance to win the first UCL home game in three outings.
They spoke to Sky Italia (via VoceGiallorossa) in the post-match press conference, stressing on the fact that Napoli didn’t do their best.
“It’s difficult to explain what happened, it’s inexplicable. In these matches, you can’t concede these goals. But we have to continue working, we have two more game in Europe. We absolutely have to qualify,” said goalscorer Politano.
His comments were shared by Napoli captain Di Lorenzo.
“We should have managed the lead better. It’s a draw we don’t like. We feel sorry for our fans because we were once again unable to win at home. We will do everything to qualify in the last two Champions League matches. Even in the first leg against Union, it was very difficult to break the deadlock. We succeeded in the first half this time, but then we needed to manage the match better. We have to look ahead to the next fixtures. We’re sorry because the fans were exceptional tonight and pushed us till the end. I’m sure we’ll be back to winning at home and all rejoicing together soon.”
The draw ended Union 12-match losing streak, whereas things aren’t as bad for Napoli, who sit comfortably in second spot with seven points, five behind leaders Real Madrid.
