Inter youth product Sebastian Esposito feels like young Italian players hesitate a lot to head out abroad and experience a new playing field, especially given their attachment to the home country where they are honed to the best of their abilities.
Having made his Nerazzurri debut aged just 16, back in 2019, Esposito has ventured elsewhere since then in search of game time, and he doesn’t regret his decision of doing so. The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at Basel, before which he played for Serie B sides SPAL and Venezia for two successive seasons.
Speaking to Calciomercato.it, the starlet revealed his thoughts on his journey and shed light particularly on the reservation among Italian players to leave the Peninsula.
“I have had the courage to go and play abroad. I would like to answer differently, but unfortunately, we Italians are very attached to our home country, especially when we came through the ranks at top clubs and are very attached to playing in Serie A and B. Moving away is a great thing because it’s helped me a lot and, if you deserve it, you play.”
He further went on to paint a picture of how it is coming through the ranks of Serie A teams.
“In my opinion, in Italy they really build you up, but then you can’t put a foot wrong. As soon as you do well you’re a phenomenon, and then as soon as you make a mistake you’re young, you’re not ready, and you have to go to Serie B or play here and there.”
Esposito is set for another loan move, this time to Belgian giants Anderlecht after Basel declined to exercise an option to sign the striker permanently due to financial reasons.
