Provisional Italy Squad for Euro 2024 Pretty Much Set

Luciano Spalletti will issue his provisional Italy squad on Thursday and then cut it down to 26 men by June 7th. Only a few doubts remain following some injury-related absences. The last man to go down was Nicolò Zaniolo. He’ll have surgery due to a foot microfracture on Wednesday, Sky reported.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, Guglielmo Vicario, Alex Meret, and Marco Carnesecchi will be the four goalies. The last two will battle it out to serve as the third-stringer. Matteo Darmian, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Alessandro Bastoni, Alessandro Buongiorno, Gianluca Mancini, Giorgio Scalvini, Francesco Acerbi, and Riccardo Calafiori will form the defense. The Bologna star distanced other options in recent weeks, also thanks to his versatility. Federico Gatti will be the main fallback there.

Italy won’t have prospective starter Destiny Udogie due to a quad injury. Federico Dimarco, Raoul Bellanova, and Andrea Cambiaso will help on the wings. The midfield will be formed by Nicolò Barella, Jorginho, Bryan Cristante, Davide Frattesi, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Manuel Locatelli. Giacomo Bonaventura, Michael Folorunsho, and Giovanni Fabbian are vying for a final spot. Nicolò Fagioli will be on the initial roster after his return from his betting-related suspension.

Gianluca Scamacca and Mateo Retegui have separated themselves for the no.9 role in 2024. Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Chiesa will round out the Italy attack. With Domenico Berardi also missing, the final spots will go to either Riccardo Orsolini, Matteo Politano, Stephan El Shaarawy, or Matteo Zaccagni. Lorenzo Lucca could be called up as a deputy striker during the retreat in Coverciano.
