Ranieri’s Cagliari Execute Greatest Comeback in Serie A History

Dubbed as the greatest comeback in Serie A history, Cagliari registered their first victory in the 2023/24 season in style. The Sardinians were trailing 3-0 until the 71st minute, after which Leonardo Pavoletti inspired Claudio Ranieri’s men to execute a four-goal comeback, completing a turnaround none expected.

In doing so, Cagliari set a record, registering a stunning four-goal haul in the final 24 minutes of the game for the first time ever in Serie A. No team before had mustered enough courage to come from three goals down after the 70th minute before in the league’s history, but Cagliari turned the odds in their favor in proper fashion.

What’s even more fantastic is that goalscorers Gaetano Oristanio and Pavoletti, who inspired Cagliari to the win, had been introduced as substitutes in the second period by Ranieri.

“I always say give everything until the end of the game. I hope that this victory will be a milestone,” said Ranieri after the game.

Perugia were the closest to what Cagliari achieved, having won 4-3 against Bari in 2001, after Bari were leading 3-0 until the 67th minute. Genoa and Hellas Verona also executed similar comebacks against Roma and Venezia respectively in 2021. However, they scored the first of their four-goal fightback in the 52nd minute.
