RB Leipzig Open Talks to Onboard Napoli Midfielder

RB Leipzig are pursuing Elijf Elmas, and the deal with Napoli has a good chance of going through. The player is keen on transferring to have a more consistent role. Things haven’t changed under Walter Mazzarri, although he’s currently out with a thigh injury.

According to Fabrizio Romano (via SOSFanta), the German outfit tendered €25M to acquire him outright. The negotiation is progressing. The midfielder is open to the destination.

RB Leipzig have Elmas atop their wish list to bolster the midfielder, and they are trying to come to terms with Napoli quickly. The North Macedonian international joined the Azzurri in a €16M move back in 2019. He has collected 189 appearances since, scoring 19 goals and providing 11 assists, but has never been a full-time starter. He’s contracted only until 2025.

Walter Mazzarri hinted at possible January departures after the shocking drubbing at the hands of Frosinone in Coppa Italia.

“We won’t have Frank Anguissa in the midfield due to AFCON; then, if there are some sales, the management will intervene to find the replacements. If somebody wants to leave, I’m in favor of letting them go, and the club will explain the choices.”

Our Take on Elmas, RB Leipzig, and Napoli

It seems like there’s everything in place for the transfer to happen, as the bid is sizeable, his contractual situation is risky, and there’s more than a hint of unhappiness. The Partenopei would have to be fine with making multiple additions in the same role to sign off on it.
