RB Salzburg Coach Jaissle Concedes: “Milan Were the Better Team”

RB Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle had earlier maintained hopes of his side potentially ‘scaring’ Milan’s hopes of qualifying through to the next round in the Champions League. However, Milan came out strong at San Siro, cruising to a 4-0 win against the Austrian giants and making up for the 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.

Speaking to the press (via MilanNews) after the thrashing, the German manager expressed pride on having put up a fight against the seven-time European champions.

“After the game there is a bit of disappointment, we wanted at least a point. But if we consider the whole group, we are proud, we are the youngest team in the group and we have stood up to the big players. So, pride predominates and we are happy to be able to continue in Europe.”

He conceded that Milan were the better side in the clash, congratulating the Rossoneri for their first qualification into the knockouts since 2013/14.

“I am satisfied, for a team like Salzburg it is not obvious to be in Europe. Compared to the first leg I did not notice big differences, we went close to the advantage but I congratulate Milan who took advantage of their opportunities and overall won deservedly.”

When quizzed if the atmosphere in San Siro was intimidating for his side, Jaissle swiftly denied it.

“I talked to Pioli about it, I told him he must be grateful to be able to enjoy this atmosphere. I don’t think my players have been influenced, they have shown that they know how to manage it and know how to draw energy.”

Salzburg will now continue their journey in the UEFA Europa League, whereas Milan will await the result of the UCL draw held on Monday, November 7. They could face either Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Benfica or FC Porto.
