Ever since they sold Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid in 2018, Chelsea have been suffering in their quest to find another safe pair of hands between the posts. The Belgian’s heir in West London Kepa committed too many howlers – especially for someone who was bought for 80 million euros. Edouard Mendy arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer, but the Frenchman is yet to fully convince either. Therefore, Chelsea are reportedly hoping to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma for next season.
The Milan shot-stopper is in the final season of his contract, and he is yet to reach an agreement with the club for a renewal. Despite being a product of the club, the 22-year-old has fractured his relationship with the Diavolo supporters in the past due to some complications within the contract negotiations.
It must be mentioned that the Italian international is a client of super-agent Mino Raiola. The Italo-Dutch is notorious for his ability to frustrate the clubs throughout the negotiations, whilst trying to seal the best possible deal for his clients.
According to The Sun (via Calciomercato), Chelsea are willing to offer 9 million Dollars per season for the services of Donnarumma. Whilst this number isn’t considered as an extraordinary one in England, it is extremely unlikely that an Italian club would be able to offer such a figure for a goalkeeper. Juventus – who are long time admirers of the young Italian – are currently suffering from financial crisis due to Covid-19, and therefore are likely to lower their wage-bill.
Although the negotiations between the player and the Premier League club – if indeed true – must still be in its earlier stages, such a transfer doesn’t seem unrealistic at all. So will Donnarumma ends up being the answer for the goalkeeping dilemma at Chelsea? Or could the Rossoneri beat the odds and once again convince the big man to remain loyal for the black and red colors?
