Roma and Atalanta Land Big-Ticket Options in the Back

Roma have bested Atalanta in the race to acquire Kevin Danso, but the Bergamaschi bounced back quickly, as they have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to onboard Odilon Kossonou. Both are joining on initial loans.

Per Corriere dello Sport, the Giallorossi will pay €1M right away and €22M, plus €3M add-ons, next year, as the deal includes an obligation to buy. The Lens manager bid him farewell on Tuesday. He’ll be the second addition to the rearguard after Saud Abdulhamid. Director Florent Ghisolfi brought him to Ligue 1 in 2021 after he broke out with Fortuna Dusseldorf. The 25-year-old has starred 117 times with his current team, scoring 4 goals and providing 6 assists. He has 23 caps with Austria and can handle multiple roles in the back.

Atalanta quickly went for Kossonou after Roma snapped up Danso. They’ll shell out €5.5M immediately and potentially €25M in 2025 should they pick up their clause to sign him permanently, Goal informs. He’s coming off a highly successful campaign. He contributed to Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga triumph and Cote d’Ivoire’s AFCON victory.

The youngster moved to Germany in 2021 from Club Brugge for €23M. He was originally brought to Europe from ASEC Mimosas by Hammarby. He racked up 34 appearances in 2023/2024.

Our Take on Roma and Atalanta Signing Danso and Kossonou

The Giallorossi might be cooking up a switch to a three-man defense with such a solid signing. There are some whispers from Bergamo about a possible immediate departure for Ben Godfrey, who hasn’t won over Gian Piero Gasperini; plus, they could use one more reliable man anyway.
