Roma and Milan Tracking Rejuvenated German Midfielder

Julian Weigl has started to fare well in the last few months at Benfica and has drawn the attention of Milan and Roma. Both teams will likely look to sign a reliable midfielder in the summer. The 26-year-old has returned to the level of his best stretches at Borussia Dortmund, when he was a hot prospect.

According to Sport Bild, he could soon be back in one of the top five European leagues after 18 months in Portugal. He revealed in a recent interview with Suddeutsche Zeitung: “The winter before my move here, I had received an offer from PSG, and I was looking forward to accepting it. However, my team completely shut the door.”

Milan and Roma are among the teams following Weigl closely, the German outlet informs. The current CEO of the Giallorossi Tiago Pinto engineered his transfer to Benfica in January 2020. They paid €20M at the time, and his price tag has gone up since then. He has collected 101 appearances with O Glorioso, notching 5 goals and 5 assists. He previously spent five years at Borussia Dortmund.

Weigl could be a solid option for Milan, which will have to replace Franck Kessié, and Roma that have been searching for a distributor at the position. The Giallorossi have rekindled their interest in Granit Xhaka, but it will not be easy to convince Arsenal to let him go. The Rossoneri will bring in Yacine Adli ahead of next season, but they could opt to sign a more experienced option as well.
