Roma and Mourinho Keen on Adding Barcelona Reject Depay

Memphis Depay bounced back in Qatar after a rough first part of the season with Barcelona, and Roma are plotting an attempt to onboard him in January. The Giallorossi were reportedly one of the few clubs the entourage of the Dutchman offered his services to.

According to TuttoSport, the capital side is gauging whether they can add him on loan in the upcoming window. And then, if things go well, they would look to reach agreement on a multi-year contract since his current one with Barcelona runs out at the end of the season.

As per Calciomercato, Barcelona would prefer an outright sale, but they would be content to cash in €2M. They got him for free from Olympique Lyonnais in July 2021. However, Roma might have trouble coming to terms with Depay on his wages. The forward was close to joining Juventus in the summer, but the talks collapsed for such reason. Sevilla, Chelsea, and Manchester United are also on his trial, Corriere dello Sport informs.

José Mourinho coached the attacker at Manchester United in 2016/2017, but the two didn’t hit it off. He played 134 minutes across 8 appearances and moved to France in January. The Special One is said to be a main proponent of the signing.

Our Take on Roma and Depay

The Giallorossi have proven to be capable of orchestrating cheap deals for high-profile players lately, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they targeted the Dutchman. On the other hand, a loan would be highly unusual for somebody in his contractual situation. Secondly, they already acquired Ola Solbakken to bolster their attack. Their pursuit would make more sense for a summer move when Tammy Abraham, Andrea Belotti, and Nicolò Zaniolo might depart.
