Milan Icon Backs Mourinho and Roma to Surprise Next Season

José Mourinho spent his first Roma season getting his team together and might just be the surprise in Serie A next season, according to ex-Milan tactician Arrigo Sacchi. The former Italy manager is excited about the Special One’s upcoming campaign and optimistic about how his side will turn out compared to other league rivals.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sacchi shed thoughts on how Roma could pop up in the race for the Scudetto.

“I think they could really be the surprise of the year.”

Mourinho won the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League title after beating Feyenoord in the final, and Sacchi believes that particular victory could help boost the team’s morale and standing as they head into the 2022/23 season.

“Mourinho did a great job last season. He won the Conference League which could further fuel the way the team will approach this next campaign.”

Roma finished sixth last season with 63 points, one ahead of Fiorentina and one behind city rivals Lazio. The Giallorossi are making slow but worthwhile moves in the transfer market this summer, having already added Nemanja Matic and Mile Svilar on Bosman deals, and Lille fullback Zeki Celik arriving for a fee.

Inter target Paulo Dybala is also being kept tabs on by the capital club, as it is understood coach Mourinho is pressuring the Roma management to go after him.
