Roma Closing In on PSG Midfielder to Replace Matic

Roma and Nemanja Matic are at odds as the Serbian veteran continues to push for a move to Ligue 1 side Rennes. But Jose Mourinho already has a plan to replace the aging midfielder. Paris Saint-Germain outcast Leandro Paredes could soon return to the Stadio Olimpico, reports Santi Aouna.

Mourinho’s decision to omit Matic from tonight’s friendly against Albanian outfit Partizani suggests the breakup is inevitable. Despite being granted a chance to play under his favorite manager, the ex-Manchester United ace doesn’t see himself at Roma anymore.

While Roma would ideally keep hold of Mourinho’s pupil, the player’s wish to join Rennes strips them of any bargaining power. Houssem Aouar’s arrival on a free transfer won’t be sufficient if the Serbian departs. With that in mind, Roma and PSG have accelerated talks for Paredes.

Back in Paris from an underwhelming loan spell at Juventus, the Argentine is ready for a new chapter outside the Parc des Princes. Negotiations between Roma and PSG are underway, with Les Parisiens seeking around €5 million to sanction a move.

Given today’s market prices, it would barely scratch the Italians’ finances. Paredes is enthusiastic about returning to Roma, where he launched his European career. The 29-year-old spent three years in the ‘Eternal City’ between 2014 and 2017 before joining Zenit St Petersburg.

Paredes could come with a travel companion, as Roma haven’t given up hope of signing Renato Sanches. However, the Giallorossi are struggling to seal the midfielder’s loan move.
